Abstract	This paper presents an improved dynamic model of power-split hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and applies a model predictive control algorithm to the energy management of HEVs. Majority researches only consider the dynamics of the battery state of charge, but ignore the dynamics of IC engines and electric motors. Instead, this paper takes into account both the dynamics from the electrical and the mechanical path. To improve fuel economy, the rate of fuel consumption is included in the cost function in a segmented linear regression form. Besides, the engine efficiency is also included in the cost function. Given the dynamics model and the cost function, a model predictive control algorithm is proposed to handle the nonlinear constrained optimal problem. Simulation results verify that the proposed approach improves the fuel economy and enhances the engine efficiency.
