Abstract	The notion of composite property mapping (CPM) introduced by Cadzow (see IEEE Trans. Acoust., Speech, Signal Processing, vol.36, p.49-62, 1988) is applied to finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter design. The result is a simple and transparent algorithm that could synthesize low-pass, high-pass, and bandpass filters with linear phase. Examples of FIR filter design are shown for low-pass, high-pass and bandpass specifications. Compared with other approaches the CPM algorithm is simple to program and converges quickly. An interesting feature of the present technique is that the computation time required is independent of the order of the filter since the computation complexity depends only on the dimension of the discrete Fourier transform selected.
